Lightning Gelatin Lifters

Gelatin lifters are high-quality elastic sheets of rubber with a low adhesive gelatin layer on one side. The advantage of using rubber-gelatin lifters is their elasticity and low tack. The low tack will pick up the dust from the shoe print on a paper box, for example, but not tear the paper from the box. Because of their elasticity, rubber lifters can be used to pick up latent prints on uneven or curved surfaces, such as light bulbs, door knobs or stucco.

The data about the location of the latent print or shoe print, the case number, date and your initials can be written on the back of the lifters using a regular ballpoint pen. The black rubber-gelatin lifters are white on the back for writing purposes.

Lifted shoe prints (dust marks) may slowly fade in time. For very weak prints this may be noticeable after storing for a few days. This will depend on temperature. The lower the temperature, the slower the fading. This, however, should not be a concern, since lifted shoe prints can easily be photographed after removing the cover sheet. Oblique lighting will show details not visible before photographing.

Lifters are normally stored at room temperature (20° C, 68° F), though storage in a refrigerator is advantageous. While black and white lifters have no specific shelf life, it is best to not keep more than a six-month to one-year supply in stock. Over time, the transparent lifters slowly develop a brown tint. This is due to a chemical reaction between the gelatin and the ingredients added to give the transparent lifters a higher tack than white and black lifters. It becomes noticeable after a number of months storing at room temperature. Therefore, it is preferable to store the transparent lifters in a refrigerator. Upon prolonged storage, especially in a humid environment, the lifters will attract some water, resulting in a small loss of tack. Although this does not render the lifters unusable, storing in a humid atmosphere should be avoided.

Rubber-gelatin lifters are available in three colors and two sizes: 5.2" x 7.2" and 5.2" x 14.4". The larger size can be used for footprints or footwear impressions in dust. The smaller size can be used for palm prints or cut into smaller sizes for one or more fingerprint lifts. Each pack is wrapped in foil to keep the lifters clean. Lightning Lift Pads

Lightning Lift Pads are an easy-to-use alternative to regular rolls of tape for lifting latent prints.

These are similar to our pre-cut Lightning Lifts, but instead of being individual pieces of tape with a backer, these transparent Lightning Lift Pads are a pad of individually cut pieces of tape. For those of you who like the convenience of pre-cut lifting tape for latent prints instead of cutting it from rolls, here are four sizes of pre-cut pads of transparent lifting tape.

Lightning Lift Pad has 25 sheets per pad and comes in a pack of four pads, giving you a total of 100 sheets of lift tape. The Lightning Lift Pads are available in four sizes, 2" x 2" for single finger latent prints, 2" x 4" for two or three finger latent prints, 4" x 4" for latent prints with three or four fingers and joints and 5" x 7" for palm prints.

Just lift off one sheet, place it over the latent print, rub it down, lift it off and place it on the appropriate size and color of backing card. Each sheet has a 3/4 inch “handle” to separate it from the next layer. So, actually, the 2" x 2" sheet of lift tape is 2" x 2 3/4".

The paper strip on the handle can be peeled off and the adhesive area there used also. However, leaving the paper strip on the handle and using it to hold on to the lift tape helps to prevent leaving your own fingerprints on the adhesive side of the tape. Keeping your own fingerprints off of the underside of the tape assures that the latent print examiners won’t be comparing your latent prints to the rolled prints of possible suspects.

Lightning Lift Pads are also available pre-packaged with latent print cards. Each pack comes with 100 latent print cards, enough to put one lightning lift sheet per card. The 4" x 4" and 5" x 7" come with our 5 1/2" x 8 1/2" latent print cards, while the other size lift pads all come with our standard 3" x 5" cards.

Lightning Lifts for footwear impressions

tning LiftsTM are clear, pre-cut latent print lifters. The lifter is held by a black tab at the top and the protective cover is peeled off and discarded. Then, you place the adhesive side on the latent prints, rub it down and lift it. Place the lift tape on the appropriate size and color of backing card.

Advantages of using Lightning LiftsTM :

The tab keeps fingerprints off the lift.

The writing on the tab ensures you are viewing the print from the correct side.

The tab is a convenient "handle" to pull up the lifter.

Make a habit of placing the lift so that the tab is "up" in relation to the print.


The 6" x 15" size of the Lightning LiftsTM is specially designed for footwear impression lifts, but it can be cut into smaller sizes for palms or other odd-sized or large areas of latent prints or partial prints.
