Each Blood Alcohol Collection Kit contains all necessary materials and supplies to preserve liquid blood samples. It comes complete with instructions for use and all necessary forms, seals and certificates to establish chain-of-possession for evidentiary proceedings. These kits enable the responsible agency to collect and preserve multiple specimen samples and transport them to and from the designated laboratory.
The specially-designed mailable container includes an absorbent material which has been approved by the Federal Express Blood/Urine Diagnostic shipping program. Established NIDA, Legal and Medical guidelines are satisfied.
This In-Vitro Blood Alcohol Kit differs from Kit 4990 in that it has two 10 ml Vacutainer® tubes containing 100 mg Sodium Fluoride and 10 mg Potassium Oxalate. It is designed to meet the requirements of those states mandating by law that the Sodium Fluoride preservative be at least 1% of the 10 ml blood sample. It contains instructions for use and necessary forms, seals and certificates to establish chain-of-possession. 25 kits per carton.
The Buccal Swab Collection Kit is in the form of a medium size envelope which
can be mailed or hand delivered to the laboratory. This type of collection can
be done by law enforcement personnel and does not require medical personnel to
do the collection. Simply follow the simple directions in the kit as to the
collection of the sample by rubbing the cotton swabs in the suspect’s mouth or the inside of the cheek. Of course, gloves are provided in the kit, along with documentation forms and security labels. Once the collection is complete, place the swab in the smaller inner envelope, seal it with one of the enclosed evidence seals and ship the sample to your laboratory.
For times at crime scenes when you need to collect biological stains for evidence, here is a kit to help you. The Blood/Body Fluid Stain Collection Kit has been developed for the collection of wet or dry stains on surfaces that are not easily transportable to the crime laboratory for analysis, i.e., walls, doors floors, window frames, etc. If the stain is on clothing, bed sheets, couch cushions or items which can be transported, check with your crime laboratory before you decide whether to do the stain collection yourself or to collect the whole object. More than likely, you will be required to submit the entire article for analysis.
This collection kit contains rubber gloves, a vial of distilled water, five envelopes containing two cotton swabs each, five swab envelopes and five swab boxes. It also contains complete instructions for collecting dried stains and wet stains. There is a seal for closing the box and the box meets the United States Postal Service standards for mailing biological samples.
The Whole Blood Collection Kit will most likely require qualified medical
personnel to perform the collection of the blood. The kit includes everything
necessary for drawing a small blood sample from the individual. It includes a
syringe to draw the blood, a glass vial to hold the sample, sterile gauze pad,
security and biohazard labels and a padded envelope to protect the blood sample
while it is in transit. The kit comes in a small box which can be used to mail
or deliver the blood sample to a laboratory. It is important that the officer
involved be present and witness the collection procedure. This should be noted
With the advent of new, faster, more precise DNA testing, collecting evidence such as blood and body fluids from crime scenes has become even more important than before. This evidence must be collected properly for accurate test results.
If the blood stain is damp, dab one sterile cotton swabs on the stain. If the stain is dry, wet the swab with distilled water and dab on the stain. Wet a second swab with distilled water and swab the background surface near the stain without touching the stain. The second swab is used to determine if any contaminants may be on the background. At the end of the collection process, also wet two swabs with distilled water only. This is a control sample to show that your distilled water did not contain any contaminants.
Once you get them back to your office, you must dry the swabs before packaging. Here is a swab dryer, a case for carrying the swabs from the crime scene and packages of sterile cotton swabs. The Swab Dryer is 8" W x 13.5" L x 8.5" H. The rack inside holds 18 swabs at one time. There are nonskid feet on the bottom for placing the dryer on a counter and two key hole attachments on the back, for mounting. A timer comes with the dryer so you are reminded to take the swabs out. The Rack and Carrying Case is used to transport the swabs from the crime scene to your office in a clean container. See
Tech Notes
Used for the presumptive identification of bloodstains, Hemident® is nondestructive and enables the investigator to retain the evidence intact for further laboratory analysis. Each test is a compact, self-contained unit, consisting of two ampoules of prescribed reagent within a disposable plastic tube. The reagents are reliable and sensitive, capable of identifying one part per million of blood. Hemident® was designed for field test use and, as such, will not distinguish between human and animal blood. Laboratory serology analysis is necessary to determine whether the source was human or animal. McPhail's Reagent produces a blue-green color.

Hema-GlowTM is a spray reagent for the detection of blood at crime scenes. Spray the solution on the suspected area, then observe and photograph the glowing stains. There are two bottles of pre-mixed solution. When ready to use, pour the activator liquid from the small bottle into the larger spray bottle and begin spraying. No light source is required to view the results. The mixed solution will be effective for at least two months and even longer when stored at room temperature, out of direct sunlight. The kit comes with two bottles of solution, a chemical sprayer and two pairs of gloves. After mixing, the two solutions of liquid total 16 oz.
Hema-GlowTM is an indicator test and fixes the blood, rendering it useless for ABO typing. It will be necessary to collect samples for analysis prior to spraying with Hema-GlowTM. A specific caution in using these liquids is they are flammable so you should not smoke or be around open flames while spraying them.
