3M Vacuum Collection System

At the scene of a sexual assault or homicide, trace evidence, such as hairs and fibers, which will be needed for the successful prosecution of the case, may not be recovered because they cannot be seen or easily collected. The 4" diameter filter in the 3M Filter Nozzle can pick up trace particles as small as 0.1 micron in size (about 1/40 the diameter of an average human hair).

The 3M Vacuum, 15-foot power cord and 8-foot hose are contained in a compact case (17.8" x 7.75" x 9.25" or 45.2 cm x 19.7 cm x 23.5 cm, weight: 9 lbs. 14 oz.). The Filter Nozzles are sealed with tamper-evident tape and individually cleanroom-wrapped. Attach the filter to the end of the hose and vacuum the area or evidence in question. Submit the entire sealed Filter Nozzle in its included evidence bag to the Crime Lab for examination. These Filter Nozzles are compatible with vacuum hoses that have an outside diameter of 1.19" - 1.25". The unit has a 3-year warranty.

The object of using a new cleanroom-sealed Filter Nozzle each time is to prevent contamination from previous uses. Unless a reusable nozzle is thoroughly washed and cleanroom-sealed before the next use, contaminants from the previous crime scene may still be present. They could be collected in the filter used on the present crime scene and false evidence would be obtained. This situation would be difficult to defend in a courtroom examination.

After using the nozzle seal it up in the second evidence bag supplied.

3M Methanol Soluble Evidence Tape (3 Rolls)

3M is famous for their Scotch Brand adhesive tapes, but this soluble tape is one you may not have heard about. To collect trace evidence, such as hairs and fibers, repeatedly press a length of soluble tape over the suspected surface. This could be a car seat, the floorboard of a car, a couch or sheets from a bed, etc.

To recover the trace evidence, place the tape in a beaker of methanol just deep enough to cover the tape. Wait until the methanol has dissolved the adhesive on the tape. Remove the paper tape backing from the beaker. Pour the methanol through a filter and collect the trace evidence remaining on the filter. Each roll of soluble tape is 3 inches wide and 60 yards long.
