This fully updated Second Edition of the bestseller, Advances in Fingerprint Technology, covers the latest developments in latent fingerprint processing, including physical, chemical, instrumental, and combination techniques. Written by a renowned group of leading forensic identification and criminalistic experts, this valuable work presents exciting progress in fingerprint technology. This updated edition includes information on: .
Latent fingerprint chemistry . Techniques directed at lipid-soluble components More succinct treatment of the AFIS system.
A new procedure that applies nanocrystal technology to latent fingerprint development
An Introduction to Lasers, Forensic Lights and Fluorescent Fingerprint Detection Techniques
by E. Roland Menzel
Dr. Menzel discusses the use of light sources in this easy-to-understand book. Other topics include photography and latent print development techniques. He discusses different types of surfaces and suggests optimum processing for each. For those just beginning to use a forensic light, this book is helpful. 1991.
Soft cover, 55 pages.
This book can be used as a training text for new employees or can be read by beginners. Many instructors use it as a primer for basic latent print development college classes. Sections cover:
How latent prints are deposited Investigating the Crime Scene Which powders to use
How to lift and preserve the latent prints
There are simple to follow sketches on how to powder a surface and how to tear and lift with tape. 1993.
Soft cover, 60 pages.
by E. Roland Menzel, Second Edition, Revised and Expanded
More than twice the number of pages than the previous edition, this new book includes updated technology, in general, and updated fingerprint technology, specifically. Dr. Menzel writes, ""the fingerprint field has taken on dimensions that could just barely be foreseen in 1980, and that have since evolved from futuristic dream to reality."" .1999. Hardcover, 272 pages. Second Edition
Many of you may remember the first edition of the Handbook and some of you even used it as a text book in your classes in the past. Then, it went out of print and no more copies were available for almost two years. The Home Office rewrote the large Manual, updating the new chemical processes and including an extensive section on the safety issues and that book was available last year. Now, the Home Office has produced the updated version of the Handbook. It has the wonderful sequential processing charts which tell you the types of chemical processes to use to develop latent prints on various types of surfaces and in which order. Please remember though, this is a condensed version of the Manual and some information, such as formulations, are in the Manual but not in the Handbook. The Handbook is supposed to supplement the Manual, not replace it. Because we do not know how many copies will be produced, if you want one copy or if you want twenty or thirty copies for future classes, you might want to order them now. We cannot guarantee how long these informative books will remain in print. If you have ongoing classes all year long, consider ordering enough books for all your classes at this time. Many of you were very unhappy when you tried to order this book a few years ago and then, had to scramble around for a replacement book when you found out this one was out of print.
Friction Ridge Skin Comparison and Identification of Fingerprints - 8-5008
by James F. Cowger
While the author focuses largely on the comparison of latent prints, he also covers latent print development techniques, photography of latent prints, how to roll fingerprints and a brief description of fingerprint and palm print pattern definitions. Each subject starts with the basics, then moves into advanced theory. Mr. Cowger successfully explains the complex thought processes and scientific concepts involved in performing a latent print comparison of fingers or palms. He devotes more space to palm print terms and identification than any other author has in the past. There are sections on tonally reversed prints, laterally reversed prints, distortion and overlain prints. If you do latent print comparisons, this book should be on your shelf next to Scott's Fingerprint Mechanics. 1983.

by Police Scientific Development Branch/British Home Office
This revised manual is the most comprehensive work ever done on the subject of fingerprint development techniques. The first edition was excellent and now, this second edition is even better because it contains more chemical processes and important safety information. There is a large section of color-coded charts listing a particular surface and the various latent print developing techniques to be applied to that surface, and the order in which to use them. Another large section goes into great detail of the mixing instructions and health and safety issues of the various chemicals. At the beginning of each chapter on a particular chemical, there is a color photograph of a sample of what the resulting latent print may look like. The pages are plastic-coated to resist tearing and chemical staining. This new edition contains new chemical processes, such as alternative Amido Black formulations, new non-CFC solvent systems for Ninhydrin, and removal of some fluorescent dye formulations in Superglueª. A fingerprint laboratory floor plan, information on choosing respiratory protective equipment and health and safety guidelines have been added to Chapter Two. At the end of most divisions, there are pages listing books and journal references.
To meet all of the new safety requirements of the British Government, the Home Office rewrote the Manual to include all the possible issues involving the safe handling and mixing of these chemicals. While some of the safety requirements here in the US may be a little different than those in the UK, it is always better to use the most stringent procedures to guarantee your safety and the safety of your co-workers. 1998, Sturdy 4-ring binder, 322 pages. Second Edition.
David R. Ashbaugh has spent much of his professional career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police studying friction ridge identification, including ridgeology and edgeoscopy. His research has rocketed him into the position of the world renowned expert on the subject. Chapters cover:.
the history of friction ridge identification. the friction skin medium. the identification process. poroscopy and edgeoscopy. the Friction Ridge Analysis Report.
an Introduction to Palmar Flexion Crease Identification, and more.
Finishing the book are a huge bibliography, a glossary and an index. Here is your chance to learn more about ridgeology from the renowned expert.
Recovery of Latent Fingerprint Evidence from Human Skin
by W. C. Sampson, K. L. Sampson and M. Frank Shonberger
While the title describes the subject of the book, this is the first complete publication on this topic. The authors discuss the various techniques for developing latent prints and compare the success rates. Several methods use cyanoacrylate fuming. There are many pages covering the trial-and-error experiments and the actual cases using various techniques of glue fuming to develop latent prints on skin. This book represents years of research on actual cases and test cases. 1997,
Soft cover, 71 pages.
This is the ""granddaddy"" of textbooks on fingerprints. Chapters include:
Fingerprint Identification, Taking fingerprints, Latent Fingerprints and Crime Scene Procedures, Fingerprint Equipment, Powder techniques, Chemical techniques, Physical Techniques, Lifting techniques,
Fingerprint Cases
While it does not contain information on lasers or AFIS computers, this is an excellent, comprehensive book on the basics of latent print development techniques which should be the foundation of study for every latent print examiner. This book includes information which you cannot find in other textbooks on the subject. The bibliography contains references to articles which are a rare find. 1978. Hardcover, 460 pages.
This book is required reading by the IAI Crime Scene Certification Board for Level II.
This book addresses methods and
techniques involved in presenting courtroom testimony. Effective courtroom testimony involves knowledge, experience, training, preparation, demeanor and appearance. It will attempt to address some methods and techniques that will aid the fingerprint expert in presenting the most
convincing testimony possible.
This book will give you a
foundation on which to build comparison skills. The information in this book is designed for the novice or individual who has never compared fingerprints, but wants a foundation on which to build.
